Mauthausen Concentration Camp Day Trip from Vienna

Visit Mauthausen Concentration Camp on a day trip from Vienna

By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen Concentration Camp had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was the last camp complex to be liberated by the Allies.

Begin your day with a cab ride from your hotel to central Vienna to join up with your driver. Hold on to your receipt so that your cab cost can be repaid after your trip.

Climb aboard your comfortable tour vehicle, meet your friendly English-speaking tour escort and become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the 2,5-hour ride from Vienna. Relax as you journey through the countryside of Lower and Upper Austria.

Arrive at Mauthausen Memorial, a building that stands on the site of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) and begin touring independently through the grounds. See Wiener-Graben quarry, the prisoners’ barracks, the so-called 'Stairs of Death,' SS-quarters, gas chamber, camp prison and the Mauthausen Museum for more historical background on the camp and WWII.

A range of freshly-prepared regional dishes is available for lunch at the Mauthausen Memorial's Bistrol. Afterward, climb back aboard  tour vehicle and begin the drive back to Vienna. You will be returned to the Vienna State Opera in Downtown Vienna.

Eye opening, gloomy but worth the expense. Reading about these places and seeing them in Movies are one thing. But Nothing beats by actually physically being there.

Excellant dutch guide Tom. Comfortable bus and very good cafe for late lunch. As for the camp its well worth a visit to see what happened. I shant say it was a great trip because that is the wrong word but very eye opening to the nazi regime

Our guide Tom was very knowledgeable on Vienna as we departed the city on our way to Mauthausen. Our journey to Mauthausen didn't seem long and it helped to view the video on the memorial prior to arriving, there was much to see more than what we were able to take in, the only thing we weren't able to see was the stairs which happened to be closed being it was winter. If you visit Vienna, a day trip to Mauthausen should be one place to see not for young children.

Very glad I went on this trip. The guide was very nice. I went with my husband and there was one other person on the bus. We watched a video on the way up and had the audio guide to use when we got there. There was not enough time scheduled to walk around. We were very rushed since we looked at the memorials when we got there and then went inside the camp. On the way back we stopped for lunch. We could have used some of the time for walking around the camp.

Went on a cold, wet, dreary day...but the van driver had umbrellas and wa filled with facts there and back. This tour is self guided and has a large amount of walking. Extremely well done while presenting the details of some of the most horrific historical acts. It is an emotional journey. The drive there and back is filled with facts about Vienna. A nice lunch option is provided at your own expense. I highly recommend you not miss this tour if you are interested in history and have a day to spend.

Excellent tour. There was only 6 of us on the tour which made it easy to ask questions and meet people with similar interest. The guide was very knowledgeable. He was able to answer all our questions and he provided an ipad for us to look at on the way to the camp so we knew what to expect when we arrived. This was really good and helped in making the best of the tour. It was a very interesting but sad tour but well worth a visit

You have to go here to see this place to understand what happened in this grim part of history. The guide was fantastic and was simply a wealth of knowledge. Well organised and a must do. Put Mauthausen on your bucket list.

We did 3 Viator trips during a recent trip to Germany/Austria. This was, despite the subject matter, our favorite. Likely because it was small, had 3 hours at Mauthausen, and Pierre, our host/driver, was knowlegeable and gracious. He even dropped us at our hotel when returning to Vienna. This trip is worthwhile.
