What You Can Expect

5-Hour Shifen Old Street Walk and Pingxi Sky Lantern Tour from Taipei

Pingxi Sky Lantern Experience and Old Street Walk

Your tour begins with an 8.30am pickup from your central Taipei hotel by air-conditioned coach. Soak up the scenery as you drive through New Taipai City, then head into the countryside, winding along mountain roads into the Pingxi district.

After an around 40-minute drive, arrive in Pingxi, a historic coal mining town that played an important role in Taiwan’s 20th-century coal boom. Start your visit taking part in an age-old tradition – flying a Sky Lantern. The nostalgic ritual is said to bring good health and good fortune, and your guide will explain the origin of the tradition and how it’s become the focal point of the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival.

Continue to Shifen Old Street, a lively street set around the historic Pingxi rail line, which was built in 1918, and now runs as a tourist train, following a scenic route through the Keelung River Valley. Hear how famous Taiwanese movies such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s ‘Dust In The Wind’ were filmed here and pose for photos on the atmospheric street.

There’s just time for one more stop before returning to the city – the magnificent Shifen Waterfall, a natural wonder nicknamed the ‘Little Niagara of Taiwan’.

Back in Taipei, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Well paced and light tour, just nice for an AM tour, leaving the afternoon free for a late flight.

Im glad I took this tour in my last day in Taiwan. Our tour guide is Tony and he is really professional. He explained about the places and took us to many places where we can take many good pictures, while he also helped us take our own pictures.

The actual tour duration was a lot shorter than the advertised 5 hours as apparently a cushion is built in to allow for traffic more likely an issue on weekdays. But it was very nice - especially liked the waterfall...

Good tour. Got picked up from our apartment and then shown to the waterfall. Our guide spoke OK English, not fluent but enough to understand. Then the Sky lantern was fun too in Old Shifen.
Would recommend if you have half a day to spare.

This was an amazing experience! As a family we were able to paint our desires on a lantern, and then release it up into the air. We were also able to see the quaint little town and visit the shops there, see the train, and go to the beautiful waterfall. The tour was well organized, our guide was passionate, and spoke good english. Thank you for a great time! A must see in Taiwan!
