What You Can Expect

Alsace Wine Route: Half-Day Tasting Tour from Strasbourg

Visit the village of Obernai on your half-day wine tour

Begin your morning or afternoon Alsace wine tour in Strasbourg, where you’ll meet your guide and climb into an awaiting 8-passenger minivan. Travel along a gorgeous road known locally as the Route des Vins d’Alsace, or the Alsace Wine Route. Follow this 105-mile (170 km) route as it winds through rolling hills near the Vosges Mountains through land that contains hundreds of famous Alsatian wineries.

The first stop on your tour is in the town of Obernai, with its characteristic German-style half-timbered buildings and pretty cobblestoned streets. Join your guide for a walking tour of the town, ending at a local winery to sample some of the region’s wine.

Find out how the soil, climate, and sun combine to create the perfect conditions under which the Alsace region produces world-renowned white wines. Taste most of the seven grape varietals that are grown in the area, including gewürztraminer and Riesling, noting how complex and different the flavors can be.

Get back on the Alsace Wine Route to end up at your next stop, a wine tasting in a classic Alsatian wine cellar (caveau). Find out why cellars such as this provide the ideal environment for the aging and storing of wine.

After the visit to the wine cellar, enjoy the scenery out of the minivan windows as you make your way back to Strasbourg.

As this was a small group tour, in fact we were only two, it was ideal. Our driver was generous with his knowledge of the area and then we enjoyed two visits to vineyards and met the wine-makers who explained their personal growing process to us. Really interesting, well worthwhile and of course we bought wine.

My husband and I visited Strasbourg in May. We booked the half-day tour and were absolutely delighted to spend the afternoon touring two vineyards on the Alsace Wine Route with Pauline. Pauline truly loves what she does and was incredibly informative - we felt like locals by the end of the day, as she shared not only her knowledge of the art of Alsatian winemaking but also local history as we traveled. There wasn't a question we asked that she wasn't able to answer, and we asked a LOT of questions. A wonderful experience and highly recommended!

What a fantastic wine tour! Our guide Pauline was amazing - so knowledgeable about the region, and also about french wines in general. We visited two boutique vineyards, and Pauline has such a good rapport with the owners that it felt like a really personal and intimate experience. We walked through the vines, talked about how they are grown depending on individual microclimates and then obviously got to sample the amazing wines they produce. The Alsace is predominantly white wines - but if you're not usually a white wine drinker I wouldn't let that put you off - she is very knowledgeable about all wines, and the whites are seriously good! We have been to a fair few wine tastings in France, but I have to say this was the best, we cannot recommend it highly enough!!

Excellent tour. I thought I knew a little about wines but I discovered with pleasure that I had a lot to learn.

The tastings were numerous at each of the 2 sites and although I didn't like them all there were also several which were really good

The enthusiasm and knowledge of the producers was amazing!1

A comfortable minibus and an excellent guide.

I recommend the tour to all visitors to Strasbourg.

This was a perfect half-day tour. It ended up just being my husband and me on the tour so it was quite personalized. We cannot say enough good things about our guide Jean Yves. He was knowledgeable about wines and history, and was always giving us great insights into both and helpfully answering our many questions!. We visited two wineries, both independent and family-run, one in Barr, France run by a great woman named Noelle and another in Obernai with a tremendously historical cave. We would tour with Jean Yves again anytime!
