After hotel pickup, meet your private driver-guide and delve into Shanghai’s pulsating streets. If you have any particular areas of interest, let your guide know: your itinerary can be customized to your preference.

On route, hear about Shanghai’s history, learning how today’s mega-city began as a fishing village on the Yangtze River delta. Hear how it developed rapidly after 1842, when British, French, and other colonial powers established enclaves here, shaping it into what became known as the ‘Paris of the East’ in the 1920s.

Make your first stop at the impressive Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, a showcase of the city’s past, present, and future. Head inside to chart Shanghai's changing face through the years, and viewing the stunning scale model detailing its planned development. See Shanghai’s streets as they were in 1930s, and discover the planners’ vision for the city through the interactive displays.

Next, stroll along the famous Bund waterfront, overlooking the Huangpu River. Admire the imposing buildings testifying to the city’s colonial golden age, and gaze across the river to the skyscraper-filled Pudong district — two sides of Shanghai squared up against each other.

Enjoy a Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, and then continue to the Yuyuan Garden, Shanghai’s largest classical Chinese garden. Stroll around the pagodas, ponds, bridges, and rockeries that date to the Ming and Qing imperial eras, and scout out souvenirs and culinary delicacies at the Yuyuan Bazaar.

Then, follow your guide into Old Street, a quaint avenue lined with curio shops, teahouses, stores, and cultural hotspots.  Admire the Ming- and Qing-style buildings with their upswept eaves, checkered windows, and red columns, gaining a sense of Shanghai as it was before the arrival of European influences.

After about eight hours, your tour ends with a late afternoon hotel drop-off.
