Overview

Enjoy a cultural tour at Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village in Rotorua, where you’re treated to a performance of traditional dance and song. A local guide shares stories of Maori history, customs and craft traditions before walking you past the geothermal wonders of Pohutu and Prince of Wales geysers. Opt to include a ‘hangi’ meal of chicken, beef, sweet potato and dessert cooked the traditional way — in boiling hot pools and steam vents.
  • Guided tour and cultural show at Whakarewarewa, the Living Maori Village, Rotorua
  • Learn about the village's ancient cultural traditions and history from a local guide
  • Visit important buildings including the ancestral meeting house
  • View traditional crafts such as weaving, carving and tattooing
  • Stop at the village's Earth Science Facility, which explores geothermal activity around Rotorua
  • Watch a cultural show that includes song, poi dance (with ball on string) and haka (ancestral war dance)
  • Upgrade to include a traditionally prepared hangi meal
Make your way to Whakarewarewa, a living Maori village in the heart of Rotorua. Start with a 1-hour guided tour of the grounds. You’ll learn about Maori wood-carving and other traditions as you visit on-site homes, artisan workshops, a communal garden, cemetery, ancestral meeting house and more. Discover how skilled weavers make the piupiu (dancing skirt) and hear the meaning behind moko (tattoos).

Then follow your guide to two viewing platforms to see Pohutu Geyser and Prince of Wales Geyser in action as they erupt daily with spray that reaches up to 100 feet (30 meters) high.

Next, enjoy a 30-minute cultural performance, which features a mihi (traditional welcome), song, poi dance and haka (war dance).

Upgrade to include a hangi feast prepared in Whakarewarewa’s traditional fashion — steamed over natural vents and cooked in hot pools rather than with heated stones in a dugout pit. Enjoy a complete lunch of chicken, beef, potato, kumara (sweet potato), bread stuffing, carrots, cabbage and sweet corn on the cob with gravy. For dessert, savor steam pudding accompanied by fruit salad, custard and cream. Drinking water, tea and coffee are also provided.

After the scheduled activities, you are free to explore the village on your own.

Wonderful opportunity to learn of the history of the Maori people and see how they still live in the village. Definitely recommend doing the Hangi meal with the tour!! If time allows also go on the Buried Village tour which is only a 15 minute drive from the village. This is where the ancestors of the Maori Village originally lived. Chief was an AWESOME tour guide.

Wonderful tour guide Atutahi. She was friendly, enthusiastic and informative with a radiant personality. Learned a lot about Maori history and culture. The men and women performing traditional Maori songs and poi were professional and outstanding!

This was a great tour with a very knowledgeable tour guide. Unfortunately the wether for us was not kind and restricted the enjoyment of the day. We did see the geyser and thoroughly enjoyed to cultural show.. To be able to roam around the village at leisure is a credit to the local people. Thanks.

Good to have had the experience but not impressed by the lack of friendliness of the mainly overweight Maori residents.
