Overview

Explore the well-marked paths of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and witness Lady Knox Geyser erupt. Your admission ticket grants you all-day access to one of New Zealand’s most popular geothermal parks, located just outside of Rotorua. Stroll past gurgling mud pools, volcanic craters and steaming lakes at your own pace. Consult your complimentary guidebook to learn about the area’s volcanic activity, and view informative displays along the trails and at the visitor center.
  • Admission to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
  • Marvel at the variety of technicolor hot pools at Wai-O-Tapu
  • Arrive in the morning to catch the daily eruption of Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15am
  • Get great photo ops of the otherworldly landscape
  • See native New Zealand bush as you walk the well-groomed trails of the thermal park
Make your own way to Wai-O-Tapu, located a 20-minute drive south from Rotorua. Expect to spend between 45 and 90 minutes at Wai-O Tapu, and arrive by late morning if you wish to see the daily eruption of Lady Knox Geyser after an informative presentation.

Perhaps start your self-guided tour at the visitor center, where you’ll learn about the 1886 blast of Tarawera Volcano, which destroyed the natural features known as the Pink and White Terraces.

Get an overview of the area from the lookout point, then set your own pace over marked walking trails as you meander past vividly colored hot pools, volcanic craters and steaming fissures in the geothermal park.

Admire the New Zealand bush along the walkways, where display panels inform you about the thermal activity you see. Consult your complimentary full-color guide-map for further details about the natural wonders.

You can also grab a bite to eat at the on-site cafe, shop and picnic area while taking in the amazing sights of Wai-O-Tapu.

This place is SOOOOO cool! You can actually walk the routes a bit faster than what the park advises, so definitely take full advantage to go see everything. You are literally looking pits and pools of mud, dirt and natural gases - but it was way more fascinating than I ever expected. As a glam girl that doesn't love the outdoors I did this for my husband, who geeks out on science, I loved every minute of it and would definitely go back to see it all again.

Good value. An excellent geothermal area. Loved Lady Knox Geyser erupting, including the talk beforehand.

Not as good as Yellostone. Do not go there if you have been at Yellowstone.

It was well worth the visit as the various thermal activities along the route provide different sights and interest. The route was pretty easy to walk hence even my 80 year old mother was able to navigate. Surprisingly, the air quality was pretty decent with not much of sulphur smell, much better than some of the volcanic areas I visited before. However, Lady Knox Geyser was not as magnificent as I envisaged. Overall, it was a good item on the itinerary for NZ North Island visit.

It was a wonderful experience. With so many parks on offer, it was difficult to know which to visit, but Wai-a-Topu filled all our needs. It was a fascinating park and the ranger who gave us a talk was amazing. Sara was personable and one of the most knowledgeable guides we have come across, and she shared it all in an entertaining and interesting fashion. thoroughly recommend a visit.

We visited here because of its fame in New Zealand and it was on our drive from Rotorua to National Park to do the Tongariro Crossing. Honestly it took us only about 35 minutes to go through the whole park. Expect lots of people to be there. It is worth a stop if driving by but not worth making a special trip just to see it.
