What You Can Expect

Tuscany Countryside - Val d'Orcia Area: Private Full-Day Tour from Rome

Do you prefer Brunello or Nobile red wine?

Begin your day with a 7am pickup from your central Rome hotel by private vehicle and soak up the scenery as you leave the city behind, and head north into the Tuscan hills. After around two and a half hours drive, arrive at your first destination, the Renaissance town of Pienza.

If you’ve opted for an English-speaking tour escort, the escort will assist in recommending sites to see throughout your day. Enjoy a visit to the hilltop village, stopping to admire the Romanesque church of Pieve di Corsignano, and sample local delicacies like pecorino cheese (own expense). Alternatively, spend time exploring independently, shopping for souvenirs, and taking in the views across the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia.

Continue west, through the idyllic landscapes of the Val d'Orcia Natural Park, to pretty Montalcino. Explore the maze-like streets of the medieval town, stopping to browse the many arts and crafts shops, and visit landmarks such as the Palazzo dei Priori, the lively Piazza del Popolo, and the Rocca fortress, from which the views stretch over the surrounding countryside. For lunch (own expense) ask your guide to recommend one of Montalcino’s many restaurants, and be sure to pair it with a bottle of ‘Brunello di Montalcino’, the town’s famous red wine.

There’s just time for one more stop, in the Roman spa town of Montepulciano. Enjoy free time to snap photos of the town’s grand Renaissance palaces, historic churches, and Pulcinella clock tower; take in the views over the Val d'Orcia and Val di Chiana; or purchase some of Montepulciano’s Nobile di Montepulciano, one of Italy’s most acclaimed red wines.

Finally, rejoin your driver for the return journey to Rome, where your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

3 star rating: Worth doing July 2017

It was OK. Very beautiful, but I learned nothing. We went to the sites, and our guide told us about all of the places to shop, but she never told us about the small towns, etc... Not sure if this was a guide issue or a tour issue. Worth the trip if you need a filler day, but it would not be the top of the list.
