If you arrive during the day, enjoy the area on your own before turning in for the night. Afterward, sit down at an open-air café along the shore and soak up beautiful views of the lagoon and the white-sand beaches.

Day 2: Hotel – City Tour, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Christ the Redeemer statue (L)

After morning pickup from your hotel, travel with your guide for a tour of Rio de Janeiro. Pass by the Sambadrome, where the city’s famed samba schools compete during the annual Carnival, and then stop at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Learn more about its conical form inspired by a Mayan pyramid on the Yucatan Peninsula as you admire the architectural feat from outside and inside the church.

Next, see historical landmarks in Cinelandia Square, including the Municipal Theater, the National Library and the National Museum of Fine Arts.

Then, head to the neighborhood of Urca and board a glass cable car that takes you up to Sugar Loaf Mountain. During the ascent, make a brief stop at 700 feet (213 meters) above sea level to capture panoramic views of the city, the Rio-Niteroi Bridge, Guanabara Bay and Corcovado Mountain. At the top of Sugar Loaf, 1,299 feet (396 meters) high, soak up views of Copacabana Beach, the Santa Cruz Fortress and the beaches of Niteroi.

For lunch, dig into a traditional Brazilian barbecue, churrasco, which originated as the staple food of the gaúchos or cowboys of southern Brazil, at a local churrascaria, a restaurant specializing in this fare. Waiters come to your table bringing different types of succulent meats on skewers. Salads and other sides accompany your meal.

After your hearty fare, your guide takes you to Cosme Velho station, where you’ll catch the cog train for your visit to Corcovado Mountain. The 20-minute train ride winds through Tijuca Rainforest and up to the iconic Christ the Redeemer (or Cristo Redentor) statue.

Learn about the history behind the world-famous art-deco statue on Corcovado Mountain. Unveiled in 1931, the statue was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Built with sandstone and concrete, the Christ stands 130 feet (39 meters) tall, his arms spanning 98 feet (30 meters) wide. Enjoy the sights of Rio from this mountaintop vantage point.

After a day of fantastic sightseeing, you’re driven back to your hotel and then transferred to the airport.
