Overview

Start your Penguin Island tour with a 90-minute dolphin and sea lion cruise of Shoalwater Bay near Perth. An expert guide points out bottlenose dolphins, seabirds and other wildlife in the Shoalwater Island Marine Park before you disembark at Penguin Island for a ranger-led feeding of little penguins. You have two hours of free time to explore the Discovery Centre and island on your own, but you can stay longer to swim, hike or enjoy a picnic at the shore —  simply catch a later ferry back to Shoalwater.
  • 90-minute cruise through Shoalwater Island Marine Park to Penguin Island
  • Observe wild bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat
  • Learn about the dolphins and other marine wildlife from your expert local guide
  • Cruise by Seal Island and other small islands to get a good look at Australian sea lions and a variety of seabirds
  • Watch the little penguins feeding at the Discovery Centre on Penguin Island during a ranger presentation
  • Have free time on Penguin Island to hike, swim, snorkel and picnic at your leisure
  • Stay as long as you like then catch the ferry for the quick ride back to the mainland
Meet your guide in Shoalwater, a Perth suburb located an approx. 45-minute drive from the central city, and begin your 90-minute dolphin and sea lion cruise to Penguin Island in the morning. As your wildlife-viewing vessel glides through Shoalwater Island Marine Park, listen for the telltale clicks and whistles of bottlenose dolphins via the boat's underwater microphone.
Your informative guide will point out some of the 200 acrobatic dolphins, including calves, known to inhabit Shoalwater Bay. Hear fascinating facts about these marine mammals as they leap next to the boat and playfully ride the wake.
You'll get a close-up look at the Australian sea lions of Seal Island and observe seabirds such as cormorants, ospreys, pelicans and terns that nest here. When you reach the nature reserve of Penguin Island, named for the largest colony of little penguins in Western Australia, disembark at the Discovery Centre to watch a ranger-led demo and feeding of the world's smallest penguins. Enjoy the antics of the tiny blue birds swimming and waddling in a habitat that resembles their natural home.
After the 20-minute presentation, enjoy free time at the center, which provides care for injured wild penguins or those deemed unfit for release. The rest of the afternoon is yours to explore the nature reserve; perhaps take an easy 45-minute hike along the nature trail, swim, picnic or simply relax. When you're ready, make your way to the jetty to catch an afternoon ferry for the 5-minute ride back to the mainland.

We have good sightings of dolphins from the cruise. Only regret is that we are unable to spot any wild penguins on the island.

You actually will only see captive penguins as they are out in the ocean fishing and return to land in the evening. The captive ones are adorable and they do a commentary and feeding at certain times. The island is covered in seagulls and other sea birds. There are wood walkways on the island for a walk with nice views. We were able to see some Sea Lions and some pelicans that were making mating displays, as well as wild dolphins feeding and surfing while on the cruise. Overall it was a nice day out.

This a great trip in a really fast boat. They are really safety conscious and rightly so because while the boat goes slowly around the marine park once in the ocean it's a thrilling jet boat ride - seatbelts and hanging on were essential. Point of the speed is to get you to where the dolphins are and they found them and then teamed up with a bigger boat to go quickly and produce waves to induce the dolphins to surf which they did - spectacular. Once we returned to the quiet marine park we very close to sea lions on the beach and some swam up right by us. We also saw by dress of Pelicans, osprey and a sea eagle. They then land you on Penguin Islands so you can watch them feed orphan little blue penguins and walk around the island.
