What You Can Expect

Historic Tennessee - Southern Plantations and Presidents

The Hermitage, home and final resting place of Andrew Jackson

This historic Tennessee tour begins with a downtown Nashville hotel pickup, followed by a 30-minute drive east to the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson’s historical plantation home. Explore the mansion, just like President Jackson and his staff did back in 1836. Then visit the museum and its exhibits as well as the garden and grounds, featuring farm buildings, slave sites, a tulip grove, a church and more.

For lunch (own expense), try the onsite Hermitage House Smorgasbord, serving a buffet of Southern staples, including fried chicken and fritters, or the Kitchen Cabinet, with delicious southern-style picnic fare.

In the afternoon, take another 30-minute ride — this time back west towards Nashville — to the Belle Meade Plantation. Known as the Queen of the Tennessee Plantations, this historic mansion was a world-renowned thoroughbred horse farm and nursery in the 19th century. It’s a classic example of southern Greek revival antebellum architecture. Tour the original stable, carriage house, dairy, slave cabins and more, then close with a relaxing wine tasting at the Winery at Belle Meade Plantation.

The tour ends with a downtown Nashville hotel drop-off.

The guided tours were superb. I loved the time to independently explore the Hermitage and the plantation.

Such a wonderful day visiting Belle Meade and the Hermitage! We were visiting Nashville from WI and we're looking to see some historical sites. Staying in downtown Nashville we didn't want to rent a car, so this tour was perfect. We were picked up right from our hotel and dropped off in the early evening. Our driver was very knowledgeable about both sites and was very friendly. We loved everything and are so happy we did the tours.

Nice tour to beautiful places. Comfortable ride and enough time to explore the various plantations on your own. Lunch was terrible though and not included everyone was dropped off at the same place for lunch and told to go eat and make sure to pay for yourself.

A lovely day was spent with extremely knowledgeable historian guides, including the bus driver, touring two Southern plantations. I especially appreciated the way facts were presented as they would have happened in the day without sugarcoating. History is what it was. The Belle Meade Plantation has been very well maintained with historical artifacts that have been there from the beginning or repurchased. The only disappointment of the day was the closed off areas of the Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's home, due to refurbishing and upgrading fire suppressant equipment, but there was still plenty to see.
The lunch was great at the Hermitage Buffet - very authentic Southern, as my Granny used to make. And the wine tasting room at the Belle Meade Plantation was very entertaining with acceptable wines presented.

We went on this trip the weekend of New Year's Eve. It happened to be a cold spell in Nashville and the temp was about 10 degrees.
We all really liked the tour so much. The bus ride was very nice and both sites were beautiful. It was too cold to walk around the grounds but the grounds looked like they were spectacular. We we do it again in the warmer weather when the gardens are in bloom.

The tour was great. It is run by Grayline and that driver mainly just shuttles you from place to place. There was a guide at each place that gave you historic information at each place you visited. Lunch was awesome and affordable!
