What You Can Expect

Early Morning Athens Marketplace, Acropolis and Parthenon Tour with Pastry Shop Visit

Pastry Shop

Embrace the quiet streets and deserted attractions of the Athens morning during this 3-hour “early bird’s” exploration of this ancient city. Whether you’re an early riser or just looking for a way to discover an unexpected side of this busy capital of tourism, this trip is a great choice.

Start your day bright and early with a morning pickup from your hotel, continuing by air-conditioned minivan to historic Varvakeios Market. First constructed in the late 19th century, this municipal market has been continuously open for over 125 years since taking the place of its predecessor following a deadly fire in 1884. You’ll find plenty of sights, smells and sounds as you stroll through its narrow aisles, observing the piles of produce, watching the busy meat and fish vendors and people-watching the throngs of shoppers picking up their daily supplies.

Continue your a.m. adventures with a visit to the world-famous Acropolis and Philoppapou Hill, both still relatively free of crowds, where you’ll get a quick introduction to these ancient sites. Once you’ve worked up an early-morning appetite, head to Chatzis pastry shop in Syntagma Square, where you can snack on a cheese or spinach pies, accompanied by Greek coffee or espresso. Return back to your hotel after breakfast to continue your day as you see fit.

1 star rating: I do not recommend this October 2016

This is a new tour to Viator but i thought i'd try it. We arrived at the market at least an hour before any 'bustle of early morning shoppers' the market was closed and the stall owners only arriving to start preparing for the day. The tour guide didn't seem to know the history of the market well, previously i've had great tours with Viator in other cities where you get the full history, meet a local stall owner, try a sample of produce etc. so this was very disappointing.

I found the rest of the tour equally disappointing. you walk through Athens early morning lovely to see the city as it wakes and avoid crowds but again there was little historical context/information over the various buildings, routes we were taking. the Acropolis and Parthenon tour involves walking up to them but no entry and no time to enter, just to walk around the outside quickly and leave.

The pastry shop was nice though.. good greek coffee and spinach pies.

very expensive for what was effectively a walk around with little history/context and unique local interactions and experiences i've come to enjoy with Viator trips
