Aside from the geysers, volcanic formations, and spectacular natural scenery, high atop everyone’s Yellowstone list is seeing animals in the wild. After all, Yellowstone is one of North America’s most impressive spots for wildlife, and the Lamar Valley is the place to go if you want to guarantee sightings. Located by Yellowstone’s north-eastern entrance, the Lamar Valley is far removed from most of Yellowstone’s infrastructure—thereby eliminating many of the crowds and encouraging greater amounts of wildlife. Here you’ll find herds of massive bison relaxing and grazing on grass, and if you’re lucky maybe spot a Rocky Mountain wolf out stalking and hunting its prey. Look skywards for eagles and hawks, or out on the hills for elk, deer, coyote, or bighorn sheep. Since the Lamar Valley was glacially carved, it’s exceptionally wide and can hold a staggering amount of different wildlife, so be sure to pack some strong binoculars to scour the entire valley.  Around midday, when the wildlife thins, drop in for some Wyoming history at the Lamar Buffalo Ranch—now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Private Info

Since it’s not on Yellowstone’s Grand Loop, the Lamar Valley sees fewer visitors and has a higher concentration of wildlife. The road is open all year round—which makes for prime viewing in winter—and the valley is located about 25 minute from Cooke City, Montana, and 1.5 hours from Lake Yellowstone and an hour from Mammoth Hot Springs. As always, remember that wild animals can be dangerous, so be sure to keep a safe distance and leave without a trace.
