Transfagarasan Highway Tours

2 reviews
Travelers looking to explore the Romanian countryside on four wheels and an open road will find no better place to do so than the much-storied Transfagarasan Highway. This winding pass weaves over the Fagaras Mountains and taunts travelers with its ruthless curves and sheer drops off rocky cliffs. Ranked one of the most scenic strips of blacktop in the world, it is not for the faint of heart! Visitors will find some impressive views, but also some of the nation’s most terrifying, since portions of the road are without barriers and lead to drops above 1,000 feet.

Still, the Transfagarasan Highway is a real Romanian experience that pairs road course navigation with once-in-a-lifetime sightseeing. Travelers will likely wind through lush landscapes behind flocks of sheep and local herders who share the road with regular traffic. (For this reason, it’s best to leave extra travel time.) After the truly intrepid drive, visitors can break for lunch near Bilea Lake and recover over plates of typical Romanian fare with mountain views that are anything but.

Practical Info

The highway, also known by locals as road 7C, nearly 56 miles long and begins near Bascov, outside the city of Pitesti. It ends near the intersection of D1 and Sibiu.
