Our guide is Trevor Tutu, son of Desmond Tutu. Their family home is on Vilakazi street, the same street where the Mandelas lived, and the same street where Hector Pieterson was shot by police in the 1976 uprising against Apartheid. This is site of the famous photo by Sam Nzima of the fatally wounded Hector Pieterson being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubu.
Trevor offers a truly unique perspective on the attractions and is probably the best qualified guide for Soweto and also a notable commentator on the state of South Africa today. He is a fountain of knowledge and a charismatic conservationist.
We'll visit Vilakazi Street, Soweto where Trevor will show you the spot where Hector Pieterson was shot, then we walk from there to the Museum, the Mandela home, the Tutu home, the police station and the school. We end with optional lunch at one of the restaurants on Vilakazi Street.
