University of Virginia Tours

Established by former president and U.S. founding father Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia is consider one of America’s top public schools, on par with private Ivy League institutions. But whether you attended here or not, a visit to the school offers a chance to walk in the footsteps of Jefferson, not to mention James Madison and James Monroe, who were the school’s first rectors. Interesting sites include the Rotunda, a world heritage site that Jefferson designed as a library; the Academical Village, where Jefferson-era scholars lived and studied; and the Pavilion Gardens, which Jefferson envisioned as a space both functional, for growing food, and beautiful, for quiet reflection.

Practical Info

Free guided tours of the Rotunda and the lawn are offered throughout the year, with tours meeting daily, except for around Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Break, at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. inside the Rotunda's main entrance.
