UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley Tours

Covering 34 acres at the University of California, Berkeley, the UC Botanical Garden has one of the largest collections of plant species in the United States, including many rare and exotic plants. Known for its beauty and diversity, the botanical garden also houses several endangered species of plants. In total there are more than 12,000 species and 20,000 total plants, with more than 300 different plant families and nearly all gathered from the wild.

The garden sits scenically up on the Berkeley Hills overlooking the San Francisco Bay. A stroll through its greenery feels like walking through an oasis of calm, with plants organized by region. The native California plants section, with its towering Redwood trees, is a favorite of many visitors. The garden’s conservatory houses tropical plants, and a Chinese herb garden has some interesting medicinal plants to check out.

Practical Info

The garden is open year-round daily from 9 am to 5 pm, except the first Tuesday of each month and major holidays. The university offers a shuttle to the garden from campus. Alternatively, drive up to 200 Centennial Drive to access the entrance. Admission is $10 for adults, with discounts for seniors and students.
